Species profile
Arca noae is a bivalve with thick, asymmetrical and hairy, rectangular shells. The base of the shells is furrowed and white with red-brown stripes. The interior is smooth and white. It feeds on plankton and suspended particles it filters from seawater. It is attached to the substrate with bissus threads and is often covered with the sponge Crambe crambei. It reproduces sexually by male and female gametes through external fertilization. Noah's Ark shell is commercially fished in the Adriatic Sea and can be found in fish shops and restaurants.
