Species profile
Patella spp. includes several species of the Patellidae family. The most common species are Patella careulea Linnaeus, 1758 and Patella rustica Linnaeus, 1758. The limpet inhabits the tidal coastal area and is the most common type of sea snail in the Adriatic Sea. Limpet's shell has a flat oval shape with a certain number of radial ribs, depending on the species. Scale deposits can cover the housing and ribs. Thanks to the light-brown, green-white color of the house, the woodpecker camouflages very well against the rock, but it can be overgrown with algae or other organisms. He clings to the rock with his muscular foot. At low tide, the Limpet always returns to the same hollow in the rock, where it clings tightly to conserve moisture. It feeds on algae that it grazes by crawling on the rock. It reproduces sexually by male and female gametes (sperm and eggs) in the spring.
